The
Mochica created a very hierarchical society which was dominated
by a ruling elite that concentrated political, military and economical
power.
The power of the elite was based on a structured and rigid
set of ritual ceremonies, the most important of which were
undoubtedly human sacrifices. Very few times women took
major roles in the rituals, with the exception of the priestess
who prepared the prisoners and presented the cup with the
blood of the victim.
Under the elite were the managers and craftsmen, and at the
bottom of the social pyramid were the farmers.
