Conservation
Since
the beginning of the research work, in 1991, the Archaeological
Project Huaca de la Luna applies a policy and methodology of
interdisciplinary excavation, to assure the correct recuperation
of the scientific information and the immediate conservation
of the archaeological remains (mural paintings, reliefs, huacos,
textiles and other materials).
The project respects the condition of “work of art in current
ruinous state”, of the Huaca de la Luna, thus the ancient
Moche temple has not been restored: its missing walls have not
been rebuilt and its deteriorated colors have not been retouched.
The
only conservation and consolidation work performed has consisted
in stopping the causes of constant deterioration, like keeping
sunlight, rain and wind from directly reaching the polychrome
surfaces; applying chemical products to stop the action of bacteria
that destroy the organic components of the walls and colors,
and reinforcing the structures that were about to fall to rescue
the documentary and aesthetic value of the archaeological monument.
To
guarantee better results, the Project has put special attention
to the interdisciplinary character of the research and conservation
work in the ancient Moche temple. That is why several specialists,
such as biologists, chemists, weather experts and ecologists
are constantly consulted.
It should
also be noted that the Project works with a preventive conservation
policy, following a work methodology
designed for the specific needs of the Huaca de la Luna, according
to the current international standards, such as the Vennice Letter,
Cesare Bryi’s theory and the recommendations of UNESCO.
